Laban's Space Harmony

This approach would be great for a ‘nerdy’ inner child, one who loves details and the pursuit of truth, who wants to make sense of a chaotic world. In exploring the movement theories of Rudolf Laban, we move our attention in and out of our body, noticing how our feelings affect the way we perceive the space around the body, and how our changing shape, in turn, changes where our perception is drawn. We practice reframing movement as a series of lines drawn along geometric forms around the body. Sometimes we practice formalized “movement scales,” fun and challenging puzzles to learn, and witness their effect on our consciousness. This also allows us to do the opposite: externalize our inner state into an outer space - getting some space from ourselves to observe the way we carry our around our unique “personal space bubble” This new awareness of the elegant, complex geometry of both expressive and functional movement was awe-inspiring for me and resonated with a deeply repressed desire for order, a desire many with a wounded inner child may resote with.
